Last week was a pretty crazy week for me. To start the week, the Jets…
With a global pandemic, devastating natural disasters, and unprecedented economic volatility, 2020 has been a difficult year for so many – for individuals, for families, and for organizations. At Gears, we believe that it’s important to give back to our communities and support the needs of organizations that are helping those impacted by this year’s events.
While we have had a formal program for matching employee donations for a while now, I am excited to announce that Gears is now officially a part of the 1% Pledge movement. Pledge 1% is a global movement that encourages companies to donate 1% of their staff time, product, profit, and/or equity to any charity of their choosing. Last year, Gears’ corporate donations surpassed 1% of our profit, and we’re excited to formalize our commitment to the 1% pledge and continue giving back.
We recently shared a blog post about a charity that we’ve supported for a while now, the Budsies Pals Program. The post also contains some back story about our official mascot, Geary. Last week, we held our annual Company Meeting virtually for the first time in 10 years. Although we missed seeing each other in person we were able to carry on the spirit of the gathering and continue on with our annual awards ceremony. This year, we held a special raffle and gave our employees the chance to win their very own plush from Budsies, with all proceeds going to Budsies Pals. I will admit, I didn’t actually know Giving Tuesday was a thing until recently, but I’m happy to be announcing today that our employees raised $1310 that we will be donating to Budsies Pals program.
While we do have a few dedicated causes that we focus on – like Budsies Pals – a large part of our giving back contribution is based on causes our team is involved in personally, or care deeply about. As I mentioned above, our standing program matches any donation to these causes and through-out 2020 I’m particularly proud of the money we’ve raised for various poverty and hunger causes. In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, we are going to offer a 2X match for any donation made by our team tomorrow. Combined with a lot of the matching that each of these causes is doing, we can make a huge impact in one day (6X the original donation if the charity is matching too!) and I’m proud of the impact our small team has made.
Update: I’m super proud that in a single day, Gears employees donated $3,937.50 to over 25 different causes! With our double match, Gears as a whole donated $11,812.50 in a single day. Thanks to everyone that donated!
